A wheel of the sixth coach of the MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train, bound for Puducherry, derailed at the Villupuram railway yard during shunting operations on Tuesday. Fortunately, no passengers were injured.
Passengers waiting for the Villupuram-Puducherry MEMU were accommodated on the Dadar-Puducherry Express, which was halted at all stations along the route to ensure their continued travel without delay, according to a release from Southern Railway.
Although the derailment briefly impacted movement towards Puducherry, the main line remained unaffected, and there was no disruption to traffic on the primary track. By 8:40 AM, the affected line was cleared, and normal train services resumed.
The statement clarified that the MEMU train, numbered 66013, was within the Villupuram yard limits during shunting operations when one of the wheels of its sixth coach derailed. At the time, fewer than 60 passengers were on board, and no injuries occurred.
