Chennai Metro Rail’s First Driverless Train to Begin Dynamic Trials
The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to embark on a significant milestone with its first driverless train under Phase II of the metro project. Manufactured by Alstom at its Sri City facility, the train features advanced technologies like Unattended Train Operation (UTO) and Automatic Train Protection (ATP), representing Grade of Automation Level 4 (GOA 4).
Key Highlights:
- Dynamic Trials: The train will undergo dynamic trials at the Poonamallee depot starting December 2024, following its recent transfer from Sri City. These tests are crucial for ensuring safety and operational efficiency.
- Features: The driverless trains are part of the “Make in India” initiative, focusing on sustainability and energy efficiency. Equipped with regenerative braking, they aim to reduce emissions and optimize performance.
- Deployment: Phase II includes 118.9 km of track, with this initial deployment set for the priority corridor between Poonamallee and Lighthouse. Operations in this segment are expected to commence by late 2025.
- Fleet Expansion: A total of 36 train sets (108 cars) will be delivered under a contract valued at ₹1,215.92 crore.
The project aims to enhance commuter convenience and promote green mobility for over 11 million residents of Chennai. The initiative aligns with India’s vision of sustainable urban transportation.
